What does RP Basketball need?

In light of the little debate going on from one of the previous posts, and a little conversation I had with my mom while watching this morning's game between Phoenix and Dallas, I found myself wondering once again what it would take for Philippine basketball to become a competitive force internationally.

And I don't mean stuff like more height, or better athleticism - these are things we just can't help. Unless the country starts some kind of immigration and "inter-racial marriage" program to infuse the athleticism of people of African descent or the height of the Caucasians, we won't be getting any bigger or faster any time soon.

What I believe we need is a change of style of play. In the international scene, we would generally be considered to constantly playing small-ball because of our obvious lack of height. Why don't we take that to heart? Instead of keeping our 6'5" "bruisers" on the ground deep in the post as our official "big men", we need to start the trend of making our "big men" more like Euro big men - versatile with finesse. There's no possible way most of our bigs will win any shoving matches.

Look at Phoenix. Coach D'Antoni has successfully brought in the finesse/run-and-gun game of Euro-ball, and infused it with the amazing athleticism of NBA players. BOOM. Instant contenders.

Obviously, copying the Suns offense isn't very applicable. We don't have a Marion or a Stoudemire. We're more like a team of James Jones, a Raja Bell here and there, perhaps one Barbosa, and one Steve Nash... at best.

All I'm simply suggesting is that we should stop using the kind of half-court basketball that exposes our weaknesses once our game is brought to international competition. Filipinos aren't exceptionally athletic nor big, but I'm sure some basketball genius out there can find the right style of play that'll make RP basketball explode just like the Suns have learned to do.

we need to stop playing NBA basketball

EXACTLY!

Caguioa is such an airhead he won't join the national team :(

anyway...

I have a lot of things to say, I don't know where to start. Pero unang una, before we build a national team, someone please fix the BAP-POC mess. Fucking airheads. Pareho silang mali. Then there are people accusing Eala (PBA), Capistrano (UAAP), Trinidad (UAAP), and the NCAA group (which form the core of Pilipinas Basketball group) of elitist basketball. And because of this, damay pati women's national team natin. See: http://carloricohermoso.net/viewBlog.php?blog_ID=335 The women's team is out of the issue, pero I brought it up so people may see how dirty the politics of our sports organizations are. Nakakahiya. Mind you, kasama soccer dito (as reported by Recah Trinidad), and countless in PATAFA (I should know :P)

The San Miguel-backed PBA National team is doing their assignment naman, as they've been practicing. They can't join FIBA-sanctioned tournaments nga lang kasi we remain suspended from FIBA.

Anyway, with regards to playing, yeah, we need a shift in paradigm. Haha, I've always wanted to be a point guard pero nasanay na rin maglaro ng sentro. O diba sa PBA, kung sino malaki, sya sentro? well, I mean, wala tayong hybrid players. Japeth is leaving for US (he's not playing for the Blue Eagles this season) kasi he's trying out in NCAA teams (uhh.. US NCAA ha). Maybe he's a start.

And yeah, with the advent of Jordan and company, mas mahilig na magdrive ang players rather than shooting. Konti nalang pure shooters sa league (PBA). Siguro dala na rin nito ng illegal defense rule (kaya players are forced to drive inside rather than score from outside).

Chot Reyes has been studying Euro-style of bball, ang alam ko. He was inspired by Argentina's win daw sa 2004 Olympics. So yun, maybe a paradigm shift + throwing airheads off BAP will do the trick.

Or ask Quinito Henson, he's overhyping Baby Dalupan, kaya daw nya magcreate ng mismatches. Ilang beses nya pinuri si Dalupan during the PBA Greatest game last May 29, 2005, pero hindi at alam ng lahat na assistant nya si Jong Uichico. At ulyanin na si Dalupan. haha.

ang haba. i should get back to work.

Huhuhu.
