Crunch-time decision

I just realized I witnessed this situation firsthand during a recent inter-color liga game here in our neighborhood. So now, I'd like to know what you would do given this scenario:
Your team is down in the closing seconds of the game, but a tie or a lead change is within reach. The opposing team has possession, so the strategy to use has to be to foul and send an opposing player to the free throw line.

Let's say you are one of your team's go-to guys, or the hot hand of the moment. However, you are also just one foul away from fouling out.

Will you or will you not commit the foul?
For those who wish to know, my teammate(s) did not foul so time wasted away and we lost the game. And, I did actually hear one of them reason, "ayokong mag-foul-out," to our bench. But hey, our game doesn't matter. I would just like to know how you would handle the situation. (I was on the bench at the time, by the way, so I couldn't have fouled even If i wanted to. Haha.)

Well, the thing about our inter-color tourney is that the teams were just assembled by the committee members themselves (as opposed to players forming their own teams), so it's not much of a "team" really. Yeah, it's unusual, but I suppose it's the only way to get the, uhm... older players (i.e. our fathers and uncles, haha) spots in the rosters.

I agree that, theoretically, fouling is the "right" thing to do. But if (any of) you actually were in that situation--i.e. "feeling it" and you're on the playing court--would you really commit the foul?

I would've fouled even if I was the go-to guy or the hot hand. But then again, I'd believe that the problem here is that the go-to guy or hot hand shouldn't even be in the position to be the must-foul guy.

A defensive scheme should've been setup so that the go-to guy / hot hand would've been guarding the opponent who would've least likely received the ball (perhaps their worst FT shooter?).

But again, to answer the question, yes, I would've given up the foul. The chances of a comeback would be far greater if I went for the steal and/or fouled, IMHO.

Ah. But considering neighborhood-wide tournaments which use amateur rules, of course, timeouts and well-planned plays/substitutions can be hard to come by. That's the case with our liga at least. Hehe.

"Are these guys playing for stats!?"

Your team is down in CLOSING SECONDS of the game...the opposing team has POSSESSION..."

"Ayaw niyo mag-foul? Sige, ako ang mag-foul, mga hayop kayo". -_-

I'd believe that the problem here is that the go-to guy or hot hand shouldn't even be in the position to be the must-foul guy.

>> i agree on bit with this one. dapat pinagusapan kung cno magfafoul.

pero kung split second decision, if i was the go-to guy with the hot hand, i guess i would've fouled. i mean in that situation, i wouldn't think that i have the hot hand and i'd be the one shooting in our next possession. ang first instinct eh stop the clock. team game mentality pa rin dapat.

Hehehe. Hahaha. Boo.

sa min nga walang liga eh -_-
